Shifting from School Year Routine to Summer Routine and Staying on Track Through the Summer Chaos

Surviving the Shift from School Year to Summer Without Losing Your Routine (or Your Mind)

Summer hits and suddenly every routine you worked hard to build during the school year goes out the window. The kids are home. Bedtimes disappear. Your fridge is raided 24/7. You’re either running around like crazy or just trying to remember what day it is.

Sound familiar?

It’s super common for people to lose momentum during the summer. But that doesn’t mean your goals have to take a backseat. With a little planning (and realistic expectations), you can stay on track and still enjoy everything that makes summer fun.

1. Set a New Summer Routine

Your schedule changed—so change your routine with it.

If you’re not driving the kids to school, use that time to get in a quick walk, prep breakfast, or knock out a mini workout. Summer doesn’t have to feel “off-track”—it’s just different. Adjust your habits to fit your new normal.

Quick Tip: Anchor your day around three consistent things—like a protein-packed breakfast, a set workout window, and a bedtime wind-down routine. Everything else can flex around that.

2. Keep It Simple, But Consistent

Now’s not the time for complicated meal prep or over-the-top workout plans.

Keep meals easy: think grilled protein, fruit, salad kits, wraps, or protein shakes. Use what’s fresh, in season, and fast.

As for workouts? If you’re chasing your kids around or hitting the beach, you’re already active. Just aim to move intentionally a few times a week. It doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to happen.

3. Make Nutrition Flexible—but Not a Free-for-All

Summer brings barbecues, ice cream trucks, late-night snacks… and that’s totally fine. You don’t need to avoid the fun—you just need a game plan.

Ask yourself: “What’s worth it today, and what’s just a habit?”

Enjoy the treats that matter. Skip the ones that don’t.

4. Involve the Family

If your whole house is home all day, get them involved. Have kids help pack snacks for the pool or plan out dinners. Make movement a family thing—bike rides, walks, dancing in the kitchen… it all counts.

And yes, your kids can eat the same grilled chicken and veggies you’re having. They’ll live.

5. Don’t Wait for September to Get Serious Again

The biggest trap? Telling yourself you’ll get back on track when school starts.

Here’s the truth: there’s no “perfect time” to start again. And letting yourself completely fall off just makes it harder to bounce back.

Even a B-minus effort all summer long is better than hitting September unable to fit into your work pants.

Wrap It Up

You don’t need to be perfect this summer. But if you stay intentional—even just a little—you’ll feel way more in control, and way less like you’re starting from scratch in the fall.
